He received his B.S (1981) in Mathematics from Keio University, M.S (1983) and Ph.D (1985) in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University, and another Ph.D (1994) in Molecular Biology from Keio University. Among other awards and prizes, Dr. Tomita is a recipient of the Presidential Young Investigators Award from National Science Foundation of USA (1988) and IBM Japan Science Prize(2002).
