He received B.S (1981) in Mathematics from Keio University, M.S (1983) and Ph.D. (1985) from Computer Science Department of Carnegie Mellon University, and another Ph.D. (1994) in Molecular Biology from Keio University. Dr. Tomita is a recipient of Presidential Young Investigators Award from National Science Foundation of USA (1988), IBM Japan Science Prize(2002), Shared University Research Award(2003) from IBM Corporation, Minister for Science and Technology Policy Award(2004)and various other awards.
