Students can experience the fundamentals of biotechnology while staying at the Tsuruoka Campus for two terms (or one term). This program is designed for students at the Shonan Fujisawa Campus (SFC) who have no experience with performing experiments, and they will begin by learning about the basics of handling laboratory instruments. In their assignments, they will first extract DNA from cultured human cells, then analyze the genes of enzymes capable of breaking down alcohol, thus performing genetic testing to determine a person's alcohol tolerance. Lastly, we will use a state-of-the-art DNA sequencer to decode the genome sequence of the extracted genes.
The 21st century is said to be the age of biotechnology and information technology, but this may be the first and last opportunity for students to actually have such an experience in their lifetime.
